60's Mini Series: First Part

Before we start talking about the 60's.. here is one of my favourite songs of the oh so awesome decade: Twist and Shout by The Beatles
PS. Don't be afraid to dance it out before you continue to read my post.

Ok, so now that you've loosen up, let's talk about the short series we saw in my English Course about the 60's.

In the first part of the 60’s mini series, were are introduced to the characters and their backgrounds and we get an idea of the kind of decade these families were living in and the type of problems they faced. For the first scenario, we are presented with a family of five: parents, two sons and one daughter. One of the sons, Michael, is characterize by his intellectual desires while the other one, Brian, wants to follow his father’s path (in order to make him proud) and go to war. The daughter, Katie, represents a normal teenage girl who is trying to find herself and on the way makes a few mistakes. With this family we presence the strict regulations of a middle class family in the 60’s decade, were the father was the superior figure of the house and his wife could not disagree with him. When Katie gets pregnant, her father even rejects her as he thought she brought disgrace to the family, in return Katie leaves the house. With Michael, we can observe how many young adults in that decade were against the war and used passive methods to protest against it. We can also notice the oppression of women, as Michael’s girlfriend is constantly raising her voice against the war but is also being ignored for being a woman.

The other family we are presented is an African-American family, were the father believes in passive methods while the son does not. The son, Emmet decides to join a group that later got him to burn stores and steal from them. In this scene, we see the father, Willie, looking for his son in the chaos. Emmet regrets his decision while facing his father but it was too late, as Willie got shot saving his son’s life. In general, in the first part of the series we can easily point out the circumstances that people faced in the 60’s: unfair war, women oppression, racism, and many others. Each family tries to face these problems while also experiencing a change in society. The effects of the decisions made in this part are to be exposed in the second part of the mini series.

  1. I agree with you when you said that "each family tries to face these problems while also experiencing a change in society" as the series present both a general perspective of the changing world, but also the problems that each character have to face in order to find themselves.
